It was clear from the answers that I am the candidate most ready to enact a positive, progressive agenda on the first day.

My team and I put together a couple videos that we’ll be displaying on YouTube in this district.

Whenever I’m out knocking on doors people say they’ve spoken to Will.

That’s what one of my volunteers heard from someone involved with another campaign for this seat. I’ve known from the beginning that this race is a marathon, not a sprint. We’ve knocked in rain, heat and snow (that was just December) and the other day we reached a milestone: 1000 doors. Over 1000 households have heard from us on their porches and patios and heard about my vision for Iowa’s future.

We’re not done yet. We have 86 days until the primary and we need your help. Visit our action page and choose the option that best works for you.

Onto the next 1000!

After a contentious debate and a walkout by Democratic lawmakers last week, two “gun rights” bills (HJR2009 and HF2215) passed the Iowa House. They were heavily favored and written with the help of the National Rifle Association and opposed by law enforcement groups down the line.

It is important that you know my position on the balance of public safety and gun rights. I support the 2nd Amendment as it originally stands in the United States Constitution. However, these two bills go too far.

HJR 2009 would make any licensing, registration or special taxation of these deadly weapons unconstitutional. Registrations and permits for handguns are done by the state not to limit freedoms but to protect them by ensuring that deadly weapons are used safely. HF 2215 rewrites the conditions under which a person may use deadly force against another human being. Under HF 2215, a person who uses deadly force because he or she believes such force is necessary in avoiding risk to his or her life is presumed justified. The current law allows for deadly force against another only if a different course of action would also put the victim at risk. This law encourages a philosophy of shoot first, ask questions later.

Both of these bills would increase sales and gun ownership while removing the requirements for classes to educate each gun owners on the proper usage and storage of a deadly weapon. This legislation does not mention how we ensure guns don’t turn up at public meetings, schools, or in the hands of criminals. Simply owning a gun does not make one safer and not knowing the proper techniques for storage, cleaning, and shooting can result in fatal or near-fatal accidents. The 2nd Amendment has never been under threat in Iowa and has worked just fine for over 200 years.

Two parts of the article are worth commenting on: the quote “I think a lot of people don’t realize the role government plays in their lives until it’s gone.” Yes! There’s a big difference between believing the government could be more efficient and transparent, and believing that America would actually be better off without Social Security, Medicare, OSHA, the Clean Air Act, the Federal Reserve, and all the other things the Tea Party wants to get rid of.

The other part I want to touch on says “his plan to shutter nine social service offices around the state created a firestorm and sent several localities scrambling for their checkbooks to keep the offices open.” When programs are cut at the state level they are often just replaced by a dozen similar programs in the larger towns, which is less efficient and will actually end up costing taxpayers more in the long run. Plus then only the larger towns will have these programs, and the flight from rural areas to towns just accelerates.

As always, I want to hear your opinion. What can we do to preserve an America that works for those who need it?

The other day I read a story about my old high school. Calamus-Wheatland High School in Wheatland, Iowa, has been named the #8 most connected high school in the whole U.S.

Not that I am surprised – I knew they recently implemented a 1:1 program, where each student in grades 7-12 is assigned a personal laptop. But it made me realize how much education has changed since I was in middle school – and I wonder how much more it will change before my two sons are in middle school. “Back in my day,” the internet was brand new and very, very slow. Laptops and mobile phones were almost unheard of. We used computers to type up our reports and papers but still did most of the research in actual books.

New technology brings new possibilities – and also new challenges – to the classroom. My children could learn foreign language and culture not from textbooks but by Skyping with native speakers and immersing themselves in real conversation. But monitoring all this new technology adds yet another responsibility to our teachers.

As always, I’d like to hear your opinion. What are your thoughts on the future of technology in education?
